Whilst easy to dismiss as yet another seaside town in North Wales, Conwy has a class and substance all of its own merit. A traditionally walled market town; stone houses and charming terraces face on to a stunning bay that is filled with sail boats all year round, lending the town a Mediterranean vibe. With a wealthy sideshow of smaller attractions and venues on offer, Conwy is the perfect entrance to North Wales and a great bastion of civilisation worth stopping at before diving in to the wilderness of Snowdonia.

conwy castleHighlighted by two of the most jaw dropping structures in North Wales, its postcard perfect vistas of the Conwy Suspension Bridge and Castle command the attention of its visitors. Home to the smallest house in Wales (the novelty attraction costs £1 for adults and 50p for kids), you can find the 13th Century Conwy Castle just a short distance away which provides a meatier kind of experience. One of the many grand castles commissioned throughout Wales by Edward I, its a World Heritage Site which is competently run by the local council. Admission prices are relatively cheap, and the views afforded of the suspension bridge and River Conwy are a sight to behold in themselves.

Cultural heritage is evidently in abundance in the area, although attractions do come in more interesting shapes and sizes. The pierWelsh Mountain Zoo keeps a surprising variety of animals and sea life that will interest all ages. Seals, chimps, penguins and variety of exotic birds can get thrillingly close to spectators, as the trainers show them off in style. The weather can be stunning in summer, so if you’d like to skip the admission price, you can risk it on the Bryn Eurn Nature Reserve or the RSPB Conwy. If you’re lucky you can spot Wales’ indigenous seal, or a whole host of classic British wildlife. All of the nearby wildlife reserves have got won’t take more than an hour or so to get to, parking is plentiful and there are some cracking places for picnics. There are benches to sit at, but it’s better to get a little closer to the nature and grab a rug to sit on amongst the flora and fauna.

Though large hotels are a little short in supply, you’d much rather stay in a traditional guest house or B&B. Opening your bedroom window to the sound of softly lapping water and sea-birds, on a sunny day its easy to forget that you’re still in the Britain. There’s a great variety of sizes and styles, suiting the honeymooning couple to the leisure hungry family. Whilst it can be pleasant to sleep in luxury, you can also rough it in one of the many surrounding camp sites, prices will be cheaper the further away you are from Snowdonia, so you can save more money for having dinner out. You’ve got the details on what’s to do, now all that’s left is to book yourself a few nights stay and get there!
