Heritage, Language & Culture
So if it's a bit of cultural exploration you're after you're in the right place. You're in good company. People have been coming here for centuries. The Romans were here. So were the Saxons. And the Normans. It is a Giant of a destination.
We're famous for our medieval castles here in North Wales. We've got English ones. Some of them are World Heritage sites. Like Harlech Castle teetering on the brink of the Irish Sea. And Conwy Castle looming over one of the best medieval walled towns in Europe. Or the world-famous one at Caernarfon. The one at Beaumaris even has a moat.
Then there's the Welsh Castles. Like Dolwyddelan and Dolbadarn perched on their moody outcrops in Snowdonia.
We've got big churches. The Parish Church of St Giles in Wrexham has a really big steeple. So you'll always know where you are in the town. And small churches. The tiny 6th century chapel on the shore at Rhos-on-Sea has room for just six people.
We've got even older national treasures, too. Ancient earthworks, like Offa's Dyke at Prestatyn and Bryn Celli Ddu on Anglesey. Prehistoric copper mines at Llandudno. Segontium Roman fort in Caernarfon. And a 5,000 year old Yew tree at Llangernyw. Now that's really old. Talking of old, one of the oldest languages in Europe is alive and well and living in Wales. You'll see it on signposts and hear it spoken in the street. And we love to talk. We're a creative bunch here.
So we love a good story, too. We've got really old ones like the Mabinogi. Perhaps it's our inspirational landscapes. Or perhaps we just spin a good yarn.
We love music, too. And singing. And poetry. Which could explain why almost every year since the 12th century we've had a big get-together to celebrate. It's called an Eisteddfod. It roughly translates as 'a sitting', although there's not much sitting going on. Mostly just having a good time.
We take really good care of our heritage here. You'll find very old things everywhere that have stood the test of time. Including our language. Come and see them for yourself. We really look after our guests, too.
